Figure 5.2 Ultrasound is used to help diagnose soft tissue injuries

        Uses of ultrasonography

        Ultrasonography is used:

        • to assess the severity and extent of tendon and ligament injuries

        • to assess tendon and ligament damage when swelling of the area makes identification of
             these structures by palpation difficult

        • to monitor healing of tendon and ligament injuries

        • to detect inflammation of a tendon sheath or joint capsule – there is usually more
synovial fluid than normal and the sheath or capsule may appear thickened

        • to detect adhesions between tendons or within a tendon sheath

        • for assessment of bone surfaces, cartilage and joint capsules
        • for detection of bone fragments and fractures
