Uses of ultrasonography
Ultrasonography is used:
• to assess the severity and extent of tendon and ligament injuries
• to assess tendon and ligament damage when swelling of the area makes identification of
these structures by palpation difficult
• to monitor healing of tendon and ligament injuries
• to detect inflammation of a tendon sheath or joint capsule – there is usually more
synovial fluid than normal and the sheath or capsule may appear thickened
• to detect adhesions between tendons or within a tendon sheath
• for assessment of bone surfaces, cartilage and joint capsules
• for detection of bone fragments and fractures
