Sand cracks are also vertical. They begin at the coronary band and extend downwards. They
usually occur in feet with long toes, low heels and a concave front to the hoof wall or as a
result of injury to the coronary band. If the tissues of the coronary band recover and start to
produce normal horn again, the crack will grow out over a period of time. Serious injury to a
local area of the coronary band results in a permanent crack down the whole length of the
wall (Figure 6.24).
