CRACKED HEELS
VetBooks.ir Some horses are prone to developing painful cracks in the bulbs of the heels. These may be
prevented by management changes and regular application of a lanolin-containing ointment
or other barrier cream in susceptible horses (see Mud Fever on page 556 for more
information).
THRUSH
Thrush is a bacterial infection which affects the frog. The horn decomposes and forms black,
necrotic material which collects in the clefts and has a characteristic and unpleasant smell. If
left untreated the infection may spread into the underlying sensitive tissues and cause
lameness (Figure 6.29).
