Synovial membranes sometimes produce an abnormal amount of synovial fluid in response
to low-grade trauma. This can cause swelling without any heat or lameness. The examples
considered here include:
• joints – e.g. articular windgalls, bog spavin
• tendon sheaths – e.g. tendinous windgalls
• bursae – e.g. hygroma of the knee, capped hock, capped elbow.

Articular windgalls
Cold, painless distensions of the fetlock joint capsule are known as articular windgalls
(Figure 9.1).
