Immediate action
• Call the vet as soon as the condition is suspected
• Stop the horse as soon as the gait begins to alter; forcing it to move will increase the
amount of damage that occurs.
• If conditions are wet or cold, put rugs or coats over the horse’s back to keep it warm.
• Arrange transport home or find temporary stabling nearby. A trailer is preferable to the
steeper ramp of a lorry.
Diagnosis
