Clinical Signs
• One or both hind limbs may be affected.
• The affected limb jerks upwards from the ground in an involuntary fashion.
• The condition may be mild with just slight hyperflexion of the limb or very obvious with
the fetlock striking the abdominal wall with every stride.
• It is most obvious when the horse is walking, turning or backing.
• The symptoms may occur with every stride or intermittently.
• In most horses the problem is less obvious at trot and canter.
• The condition is often worse in cold weather or after the horse has rested.
• Anxiety is reported to exacerbate the condition in affected horses, but the condition does
not appear to concern the horse.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made on the clinical signs. In very mild cases, further investigations may
be required.
