The techniques that may be used in the investigation of back pain include:

        • a full clinical examination
  VetBooks.ir • radiography (X-rays)

        •
             local analgesia
        • scintigraphy

        • ultrasonography

        • thermography
        • blood tests.

        THE HISTORY

A detailed history will be taken first. The vet will want to know when the problem started,

what the symptoms are, the current level of fitness and the intended use of the horse. Any
previous traumatic incidents should be noted as back pain may gradually develop following a
        traumatic incident some time ago.

        The clinical examination

The clinical examination should include a thorough check of the whole horse to make sure

there is no underlying illness or other physical problem. This includes:
        • a dental inspection

        • an assessment of foot balance

        • visual inspection for obvious problems and to check the horse’s symmetry

        • palpation
        • manipulation

        • observation of the horse in hand, on the lunge and under saddle.

In addition the following should be checked:

        • the suitability and fit of the bit

        • the fit of the bridle

        • the fit and condition of the saddle
        • the type and condition of the girth

        • the weight and ability of the rider

        • the exercise programme of the horse

        • the horse’s suitability for the expected level of performance
