THE TREATMENT
When the acupuncturist has selected the points to be treated, they are collectively called a
VetBooks.ir ‘treatment formula’. This is worked out after considering the findings of the clinical
examination, the sore areas, which nerves supply them and the principles of Traditional
Chinese Medicine. Between 10 and 20 needles are commonly used.
Will the horse or pony object to treatment?
This depends on the condition being treated and the temperament of the horse. Ill horses and
those with colic are usually very tolerant and many become profoundly relaxed and appear to
enjoy the experience. Most horses with musculoskeletal pain accept the treatment and show
little discomfort when the needles are inserted (Figures 14.5 and 14.6). Acupuncture
definitely works best if the horse, the owner and the vet are calm and relaxed.
