        Treatment of cyathostominosis

        Treatment is likely to include:
        •    a  larvicidal  anthelmintic  to  eliminate  the  encysted  larvae.  Moxidectin  (Equest)  is  the

             treatment of choice. Ideally horses should be accurately weighed, or a weigh tape used to
             avoid toxicity from overdosing thin or small horses

        •    fluid replacement – by mouth, stomach tube or intravenously as necessary

        •    codeine phosphate to control the diarrhoea
