Bleeding from the nostrils is seen in severe cases (Figure 15.19). Most affected horses do
not bleed from the nostrils, but haemorrhage can be seen in the airways when the horse is
examined with an endoscope (Figure 15.20).
• Reduced performance.
• Coughing after exercise.
• Swallowing more than usual after exercise.
• Slower recovery from the exertion than normal.
• Some horses have recurrent episodes that become worse with age.
