Laxatives and oral fluids

        Several litres of lukewarm water may be given by stomach tube to a horse with an impaction;
  VetBooks.ir  salt or electrolytes may be added (Figure 17.9). The mixture helps to soften the faeces and

        break  up  the  mass  of  accumulated  material.  Alternatively,  osmotic  laxatives  such  as
        magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts) may be given. The stomach tube may be left in place or

        withdrawn between treatments.
