Behavioural signs include:
• depression
• sleepiness
• excessive yawning
• restlessness and aimless wandering.
In the advanced stages of the disease, the liver dysfunction leads to accumulation of
abnormal metabolites in the blood, e.g. ammonia, which affects the brain. This is known as
hepatic encephalopathy. The behavioural signs listed above may be seen together with
some of the following.
