determine whether a moxidectin or a combined moxidectin/praziquantel product should be

used. Following treatment, the horse should be kept off the pasture for 3 days to prevent eggs

FEC test should be performed 2 weeks later to check the treatment has been effective.

WHICH WORMER SHOULD I USE AND WHEN SHOULD I USE IT?

There is a range of worming preparations or anthelmintics on the market. No treatment kills
every type of worm. The choice depends on whether it is being used to treat a specific

problem or as part of a routine control programme.

There is no single anthelmintic strategy that can be recommended for every
situation. In order to choose the most suitable combination of worming products and time of
administration, one needs to know the level of risk to your horse from the different types of

worm. Your vet is the best person to ask for advice as he/she will be familiar with your
situation and also be aware of any local problems of resistance to a particular

        medication.
The wormers currently available and their efficacy against the most harmful types of

worm are listed in Table 1.
