These measures should be in place before the start of the midge season.
PERFORMING A ‘PATCH TEST’
It is sensible to carry out a patch test for any topical preparation used to deter the midges
from biting or to treat the skin. The preparation should be applied to a small area of the horse
and observed for 24 hours to check for any adverse reaction (swelling, heat, irritation or
soreness) before applying it more extensively. Choose a site least likely to cause a problem if
sensitivity occurs. Protective gloves should be worn when applying these products.
Treatment
Treatment to reduce the irritation should be started as soon as the first signs are seen.
TOPICAL PREPARATIONS
®
• Soothing lotions such as Sudocream or herbal preparations can reduce the irritation. A
thick layer of Sudocream or Vaseline can protect the skin around the sheath and udder.
