Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made on the appearance of the sores and confirmed by biopsy.
Treatment
The adult worms and larvae are killed by ivermectin and moxidectin. Following treatment,
the lesions may become more inflamed due to hypersensitivity of the horse to the dead
larvae. This can sometimes be controlled with topical or systemic steroids, but these must be
used with care due to the risk of infection or laminitis. The lesions are often removed
surgically. Wherever possible, the whole lesion is removed when a sample of tissue is taken
for biopsy.
