Foaling
The gestation (pregnancy) length of the mare is 11 months (340 days), but this can range
between 320 and 360 days. As the foaling date approaches, the mare should be kept under
close observation, including at night. However, this should be done calmly and discreetly to
ensure that the mare is not unsettled. The observer should be familiar with the course of a
normal foaling and call the vet if a problem occurs. Many studs use closed circuit cameras so
