becomes the central strand. Next take the outside strand from the other side (originally with the odd
  number of strands) and work that under, over, under, to arrive at the centre. Repeat this process,
  alternating from side to side, until the required length of plait is achieved.



  French whipping: a simple decorative covering based on half hitches, and ideal for covering rails or
  ends where a good grip is necessary.


  Secure a line to the object being covered with a clove hitch, and working with one end form a
  continuous series of half hitches around the object (figure 70). When the required length is reached
  you can finish the end with a decorative knot, such as a Turk’s head.
