Next form a wall knot (see page 187) around the standing part (figure 119.2) by passing each strand
in turn around and under its neighbour, working with the lay. The end of the final strand is passed
upwards through the bight formed by the first.

The wall is followed around once more and finished by hauling tight all the working strands and
trimming off the tails close to the knot.
‘S’ laid rope: rope manufactured with a left-handed lay.
Sliding figures of eight: a knot which joins two ropes together securely, even if they are of different
sizes, and yet this knot is easy to undo.
Form two figures of eight (see page 80), one in the end of each rope, with the opposing line being
contained in the lower loop of each figure of eight (figure 120). To finish, tighten each figure of eight
and slide them together by applying tension to each standing part.
Sling: cordage of any description that is applied around an object, usually in the form of an endless
band, to hoist or haul it; see also strop.
