The Hans Sumpf Company certainly predates my time in Fresno, turning out adobe bricks long before I arrived. They were turning out pottery, garden hose containers, floor tiles and any number of fired stuff, befor I went to them with designs for my front door pulls and store signs.
This was one of those interesting, fun places I found over the years, in and around Fresno where I simply liked to hang out. To this day, forty five years later I still have seven pieces made by them in my yard. One of the houses
I lived in, in Fresno, was the Forkner house, made entirely of adobe bricks crafted in the Hans Sumpf yard.
The glazed, clay fired depiction of the Interior Dimensions Inc. logo is pictured on the previous page. It’s now a table top on backyard patio.
These days, if I’m driving north of Fresno on highway 41 and pass the Tenth Avenue turn toward the west, I thank back to those trips from so long ago into the country side, now devel- oped and unrecognizable, when headed to Hans Sumpf.
