Dear Reader:
Welcome to our newest edition of Senior Living Guide of Hampton
Roads! In our eighteenth year, we were the first local publication in Tidewater to provide a hand-
book of resources for our community of neighbors who were age 55 and over.
In the last years, there have been many changes and challenges in our industry. There are so many
choices for seniors to choose from when it comes to retirement living. Do you choose an active
lifestyle or Lifestyle housing? Age-qualified or age-targeted? Service enriched or assisted living?
Or a combination of several options in one location? Maybe you prefer to live at home and bring
care to you- there again, there are various levels of care for you and your family to consider.
Companion or personal help, with add on services depending on your health and family
situation. Our area hospitals are getting into the home health business as well. If you have to go
to a rehabilitation facility following surgery, where do you choose? They may have similar names
but are managed by different companies.
The most important thing for all of us to remember as we age is that we have choices. In order
to make good choices, we need to read as much as we can and stay informed. If you are an
internet guru, there are thousands of sites to read about retirement living. We hope you will visit
SeniorLivingGuide.com to see our profiles of “over-55” senior living apartments and homes in the
Tidewater area. 100,000 people per month visit our website for information. We are now adding
more services to our publication and online as well. There are great companies out there that want
your business, from movers, to realtors to attorneys that specialize in helping you move through
the sometimes confusing financial situations of protecting your assets, how Medicaid and Veterans
Benefits work, and making sure you don’t wipe out your life savings if you need extensive care.
Here at Senior Living Guide we will bring you updated information on your choices with every
publication. You will see articles on area seniors, area businesses that cater to seniors, and lots of
senior living communities and home care to consider. Look for events that you would like to go to
as well- some for learning and some for fun. Our Facebook page is active in listing events in the
Tidewater area.
I turn 55 in August, which makes me a part of the club. I don’t mind being called a senior, but I
kind of like “55 and wiser” as a better tag!
Sincerely,
Lisa
