Lisa Roberts
Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Association
Eastern North Carolina Chapter
As a woman affected by Alzheimer’s disease, Lisa Roberts, the executive director
of the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, strongly relates to
the 2014 Alzheimer’s Association Facts and Figures report.
The report revealed that women are at the epicenter of Alzheimer’s disease. Not
only are women more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, they are also more likely to be
caregivers for someone with the disease.
Lisa lost her mother, Lucille, to an Alzheimer’s-related disorder. “This disease has had a profound impact on
my family,” said Lisa. “As many as 150,000 people, most of them women, are living with Alzheimer’s in North
Carolina and their caregivers are paying tremendous costs to care for their loved ones.”
The toll Alzheimer’s takes on women also spans into the workplace. Twenty percent of women, compared to
three percent of men, went from working full-time to part-time in order to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s.
“As a professional woman, this strikes a chord with me,” said Lisa, who recently attended the 2014 American
Express Leadership Academy in New York City. “The role of a caregiver may be the most significant role a
woman ever has. Add to that the pressures of managing a career, and the stress can become unbearable.”
Our mission and passion is to see the end of Alzheimer’s and its devastation to our families and future
generations. The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s
care, support and research. Our chapter provides programs and support services, education and advocacy to
the 51 counties of Eastern North Carolina. Visit www.alz.org/nc or call 800-272-3900 to learn more.
