Love Your Lake Day
Saturday, July 17th 2021
Release the Loons! The only race of its kind, our custom de-
signed, and made in America, loons tumble into Rich Lake out-
let and race 400 yards to the finish line. Prizes will be awarded
to the first three loons across the finish line.
All Day—Check out the aquaria at the AIC to learn about aquatic
food webs. How can you “Love Your Lake”? Peruse the information
available on Citizen Science Projects. Investigate the research equip-
ment used to sample lakes; from the water to the flora and fauna
that lives there. Learn about a new research project examining the
light and temperature profiles of Newcomb Campus lakes.
10:00 a.m.—Woods Walk Acid Rain: Where are we now? Fifty years
after the Clean Air Act, how are the Adirondacks fairing with regards
to acid disposition. What has worked and what still needs to be done.
12:30 p.m.—Fish Exploration. Walk down to the shore of Rich Lake
and help us sample the fish population living in the shallows. We will
be using a fish seine to catch fish after which we will identify some of
the common species. Learn about the diversity of fish found in Rich
Lake.
2:00 p.m.—Status of the Common Loon. Stacy McNulty, Director of
the Adirondack Ecological Center, will give an update on the common
loon in the Adirondacks. Natural history of this iconic bird will be dis-
cussed along with recent research into how climate change may be
impacting their reproductive success.
3:00 p.m.—9th Annual Rubber Loon Race. Our flock of rubber loons
will again be racing down the outlet of Rich Lake hoping to bring vic-
tory to a luck loon sponsor. Prizes for the first three loons to cross the
finish line.
