Curriculum overview – Mathematics
Maths at Headington is designed to give the girls a strong and secure knowledge and understanding of principal concepts and to develop an understanding and enjoyment of Maths, aiding early learning development and building conidence with numbers. Teaching uses a carefully structured and highly supportive programme, adopting a spiral approach, teaching to mastery, focusing on core topics to enable children to build a deeper understanding of Mathematics. There is an emphasis on learning the fundamental skills through practice, developing luency in mental Maths and lexibility in their thinking. Broader aspects of Mathematics, including measures, geometry and data handling are taught.
By the end of Key Stage 1, the girls are very conident with place value and counting numbers to 1,000 and addition and subtraction within 1,000. They learn to use models and to start thinking about how to multiply and divide. They learn how to multiply by 2, 3, 5 and 10. They begin to measure length, mass and volume using non- standard and standard metric units and are introduced to money and time. They are introduced to patterns and explore fractions and what they mean. They learn to read picture graphs, represent lines and curves and identify simple 2D and 3D shapes. The girls practise their mental skills, especially in addition and subtraction.
By the end of Key Stage 2, the girls know the tables up to 12 and have had extensive practice solving word problems. They can work out calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages. They learn how to draw and interpret straight line graphs. They learn about averages, circles and how to interpret pie charts. They understand complex problems involving length, mass and volume and can work out area and perimeter problems. They also learn what ratio and proportion are and are introduced to algebra.
