Curriculum overview – sciences
Science is fascinating and exciting: it is all about questioning the world around us and inding creative ways
to tackle those questions by thinking deeply and inding solutions. Science often reveals more questions than answers and it is a discipline where a simple mistake can lead to amazing discovery! As a subject, it naturally appeals to the curiosity of children and their enjoyment of experimentation and hands-on activities; at Headington Prep, we aim to promote these characteristics through a broad and enjoyable Science curriculum.
The science curriculum
Through EYFS, children explore and question their surroundings through the Forest School programme and their topic-based work. Scientiic skills are then developed through the topics into Key Stage 1, where the children solve scientiic problems through practical investigation.
As the children broaden and deepen their scientiic understanding in Key Stage 2, we continue to build on
the skills of scientiic enquiry, learning through investigation, experience and discussion. Wherever possible, scientiic knowledge is learned through practical experiments and investigation. Children are also encouraged to use their experiences and skills to justify their conclusions with evidence from their discoveries. From Year 3, Science is taught by a subject specialist and, from Year 4 onwards, children learn in the fully-equipped Science laboratory.
Enrichment in science
Throughout the School, the children’s questions are encouraged and curiosity is celebrated. We aim also to help children understand the relevance and importance in what they are learning; situated within a thriving scientiic community in Oxfordshire, we offer opportunities for children to learn about how Science is used in the world and to cultivate an interest in inding out more, by offering visits and enrichment events.
