Study at home or in the Boarding House
Your independent study in the evenings and at weekends should be done in a quiet
and private space, with minimal distractions Be particularly aware of the distraction
of your phone and other devices during study time and do ring-fence distraction-
free time to get work done Plan ahead and ensure you have the time and energy to complete your assignments to the very best of your ability Sixth formers are all expected to work to deadlines and to liaise with their teachers when it is not possible to do so
Electronic devices
It is a requirement at Headington that every sixth former owns a laptop, chromebook or notebook computer You must ensure that you bring your device, fully charged, with you to every lesson, unless otherwise instructed by your teachers
Academic skills and learning development
You will already have identified many of your individual learning strengths and effective learning strategies from your experience of revising for your GCSEs However, these skills require practice and improvement as you encounter new and tough academic challenges Your Form Tutor and your Academic Skills lessons will further develop your skills in preparation for university, ensuring that you gain a sophisticated understanding of your learning profile Excellent organisation and time management is central to this
Support from the Learning Development Department is also available to you, should your specific needs require it All girls are assessed at the start of Lower Sixth or at any other time when a concern is raised
Monitoring your progress
Your Form Tutor, Boarding Housemistress, Head of Year and the Directors of Sixth Form will monitor your progress and development very closely They will recognise your efforts, successes and achievements and identify where there may be weaknesses and where more structured support is required
As well as your academic performance, staff will also be monitoring your attendance and punctuality and your involvement in both extra-curricular activities and the wider life of the School Your Form Tutor will work with you to set precise targets and provide practical help and support Any further concerns will be referred to the Heads of Year and the Directors of Sixth Form
Academic Honesty
A key part of academic study is to complete work independently You will be expected to research and write essays by yourself, complete write-ups of scientific investigations and present the results of your own data collection and research Your work, thoughts
