Thanks to the Rhetoric Cup, donated to
the School by one of our alumnae, the girls throw themselves into the challenge of writing and delivering a 10 minute speech in a whole-School event that’s held each year.
It can be a speech on any subject and the quality and range of ideas the girls come up with is absolutely brilliant. They can be funny observations about life – for example ‘People on Planes’ was a recent one – through
to challenging political viewpoints and contemporary issues like eating disorders. The girls vote for the best speeches and seven finalists are chosen from each of the seven participating classes. Whenever possible, a celebrity judge – last year’s was Susie Dent from Countdown – chooses the winner in a grand final performed before the School.
