Art and Design
Through Art and design students learn self-awareness and gain confidence in their own creativity. in developing their critical, intellectual and motor skills, it is a subject for everyone rather than just a talented few.
At Headington, girls can learn drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed-media art, as well as photography, 3-D construction and sculpture in our purpose-built Art School. ICT plays an integral role at the School and digital photography, image scanning and web-based research are all encouraged, investigating the ideas and responses of artists and designers to promote a better understanding of the visual world around them.
We develop individual confidence through a framework of clear, well-organised and stimulating projects directed by the teacher. These provide a foundation for more thematic work as students create pieces that reflect their own ideas and concerns. Personal sketchbooks and journals help the girls explore their creativity and imagination.
As with the girls themselves, no two pieces of art are alike at Headington – and that’s the way it should be.
The quality of their work is breathtaking, and is displayed to great effect in the gallery and lobby of the Art Building. Our annual art exhibition is a highlight of the summer term, not just for the School, but also for the local Oxfordshire community.
The Art Department also arranges visits to the world-class galleries in Oxford, Birmingham and London, together with regular art tours to more distant destinations such as New York, Venice, Amsterdam and Florence.
More than a third of our students choose Art as a GCSE subject, and over a quarter of Sixth Form girls study Fine Art, Photography or History of Art. Many continue these studies at leading art colleges or university and carry these enduring skills and appreciation into their professional and personal lives.
