Music
At Headington, music is for everyone. Our state-of-the-art music School provides the environment, facilities and inspiration for our musicians to participate and achieve, enriching the creative life of the School and ensuring a bright future for music at Headington.
Every girl has the opportunity to enjoy music at the level that is right for her, both within the curriculum and beyond. The Music Department encourages all girls to enjoy music, teaching all levels from basic musical literacy, learning an instrument and individual composition, to performance at Diploma-standard and higher. Our resources and teaching expertise mean that everyone from complete novices to the most gifted musicians receive the support and challenge they need to excel.
Musical opportunities at Headington are impressive. Three principal music staff and 28 visiting teachers offer girls the opportunity to learn a wide range of instruments from orchestral strings, woodwind and brass to classical, folk and rock guitar, piano, harpsichord and percussion, as well as singing and jazz improvisation.
The Senior School has three orchestras and three choirs, varying in style from the Second Orchestra and Third and Fourth Form Choir, for which there are no auditions, to the exceptional Chamber Choir, which has made numerous recordings and toured overseas. Some chamber groups are formed for specific events such as the Oxford Music Festival, a regional competition hosted by the School.
“the studio...looks lovely and I’m envious of the girls being able to use it. It’s fitting that a progressive school such as Headington should choose to add to its music department this kind of facility for new music”
Brian Eno, supporter of music at Headington, opening the new Music School
Other ensembles such as clarinet, saxophone, brass and flute ensembles, string quartets and small jazz groups are coached regularly by members of the Music Department. Out of School, several girls attend the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music and many are encouraged to be part of a number of local Youth Orchestras.
The exceptional facilities in our Music School include a professional recording studio, an electronics studio and teaching and performance spaces for individuals and groups of all sizes. We have always had a strong uptake for Music at both GCSE and A Level and these new
facilities have enabled us to add Music Technology to our A Level options.
