Sport for all
From Olympic rowers to recreational dancers, Headington offers a genuinely inclusive approach to pE and extra-curricular sport and encourages each girl to enjoy sport at the level that suits her.
PE is taught throughout the School, including in the Sixth Form, and many girls choose to study PE to GCSE. They can choose from more than 30 different sporting activities, from dance and fencing to equestrian and trampolining. Games such as hockey, netball and athletics are played competitively against other schools and girls have the chance to represent Headington School across a range of abilities. More than 70 girls currently compete at county level and beyond and the School enjoys national success in a wide range of sports, including swimming, cheerleading and rowing.
With access to an indoor pool, floodlit Astroturf for tennis and hockey practice and competition, hard courts, a sports hall and sports fields, Headington girls have every opportunity to try, enjoy and excel at sports and are encouraged to do so at every level.
As well as recreational enjoyment, sport and teamwork form an important part of the curriculum at Headington,
helping to develop leadership skills, strategic thinking, self- confidence and respect for others. We are keen to give our busy girls a healthy work- life balance and engender an enthusiasm for physical activity that will stay with them for life.
Beyond participation and competition, girls can also undertake a Community Sports Leadership Award, working with children from local primary schools and gaining a range of sports coaching skills – and many go on to pursue specific Sports Coaching Awards.
