Academic excellence
Headington’s aim for each girl at the school is to achieve beyond her expectations and to become independent in her pursuit of knowledge. We understand that no two girls are the same and we offer an exceptional range of choice in academic subjects, with the flexibility for older girls to follow the curriculum that is most suitable for them.
Above all, Headington acknowledges that self-motivation and a love of learning are inspired by excellent teaching. Year on year, our academic results speak for themselves. All our teaching staff are subject specialists with the expertise and enthusiasm to stretch and challenge each girl. Tutors are allocated to each form group, so that individual attention is readily available. Grades for effort and achievement are sent home half termly and written reports twice a year.
Preparation for public examinations begins with the option of IGCSE as well as GCSE, and all girls take seven core subjects and choose from a wide range of additional subjects. A broad and demanding academic programme culminates in the Sixth Form where students can choose from more than 30 subjects, following either the A Level or International Baccalaureate curriculum. Headington has been an IB world school for several years and the breadth and rigour of the IB curriculum is recognised and admired by leading universities around the world.
THE SixTH FOrm
The Sixth Form at Headington helps to provide a smooth transition from school to university. During this time girls develop independence and a sense of responsibility while gathering knowledge and understanding by leading the school community. Whether students choose to study A Levels or the International Baccalaureate, two years studying subjects that both interest and motivate enable them to organise their time and balance their commitments.
The vast majority of our Sixth Formers go on to higher education, with many taking up places at Oxford and Cambridge as well as other leading universities both in the UK and around the world.
BrEAdTH OF lEArNiNg
In today’s exam-laden culture it is more important than ever to extend the process of learning beyond the classroom walls and to find ways to inspire, excite and enthuse students. Classroom teaching is enhanced by lectures, workshops or field trips and the proximity of Oxford gives us first-class museums, galleries, laboratories and theatres on our doorstep, allowing us regular access to visiting speakers of international standing.
“A happy school that manages to turn out girls with admirable exam results without undue pressure and with rich extra-curricular experiences along the way”
