Curriculum
The Senior School at Headington takes girls from 11–18, with the main entry points at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Throughout the school our goal is to enable each girl to discover her full potential, balancing academic excellence with creative and sporting achievement to develop a rounded and confident individual.
The school day consists of six lessons, each 55 minutes long. Streaming in key subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Languages allows smaller class sizes where girls learn at a pace that suits them, moving between these sets as appropriate during the school year.
lOWEr SCHOOl
In years U3 and L4 girls are taught in four classes of around 20 each, which increases to six slightly smaller classes in U4 after 13+ entry. They learn English Language and Literature, Mathematics, three sciences, French, Latin, Geography, History and Religious Studies, with a choice of German or Spanish added in L4. The inclusion of Art, DT, Textiles, Food and Nutrition, Drama, Music, ICT and PE in the timetable from U3 means that all girls can benefit from the widest possible curriculum as they start to discover their own particular strengths, talents and preferences.
middlE SCHOOl
Girls choose their GCSE options in U4, usually taking a maximum 10 subjects in years L5 and U5. We offer a mix of IGCSE and GCSE, with seven core subjects and a free choice from a further 14 subjects. Students meet their
tutor twice a day, receiving the comprehensive support that enables them to achieve the happy work-life balance essential for success at GCSE and beyond.
SixTH FOrm
The majority of students move into the Sixth Form from the Middle School and many new girls, both day and boarders, also join us at this stage. Life revolves around our Sixth Form Centre and membership of small tutor groups of up to 12 students. Headington offers both A Levels and the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth Form and a flexible timetable means that even the most unconventional choices can usually be accommodated.
These two years are an important transition between school and university. Our tutors guide Sixth Formers through the start of their post-16 study, exploring potential career options and providing clear help and guidance with their university applications.
