out of its shell. When walking, it sticks its head out; but once it is full, it moves its head back into the shell and sleep. Similar to our vipassana practice—when we feel hungry, when we have sufferings, we practice vipassana. But, once the suffering is gone, we stop practicing.
If we want to completely extinguish suffering, we need to move like a turtle, not like a rabbit. To move like a turtle is to walk consistently, diligently. Even though the walk is slow, it is diligent. That should be our life’s goal. If the goal of vipassana practice is for the extinguishment of sufferings, we need to have diligence. We need to consistently remind ourselves: “Do it, do it, do it.” We need to remind ourselves: “Have dhamma as our shelter”, then our lives will be happy.
