The extinguishment of self, in search of dhamma is the removal of the sense of self. To extinguish the sense of self until only mindfulness (sati), concentration (samadhi), and wisdom (panna) remain. Wilfully contemplate natural conditions that emerge in front of us—regardless of their forms; regardless whether they appear through our eyes, ears, noses, tongues, physical bodies, or our mind. Use our mindfulness to wilfully contemplate the emergence, existence, and cessation of these conscious phenomena. Even the mind that functions as the contemplator of various conscious phenomena, we should be aware whether it also has emergence-cessation phenomenon and how it emerges and ceases. This is important. If we have the intention to experience in this manner, then we will be contemplating both the physical and mental phenomena, rather than just the physical phenomenon that emerges.
Now, let us review brie y. The key conscious phenomena of Satipatthana 4 (The Four Foundation of Mindfulness) are: To experience the physical body, to experience sensations, to experience the mind, and to experience dhamma. We must not forget that these are the key conscious phenomena that emerge for us to contemplate. These key conscious phenomena will take turn emerging regardless whether we are standing, walking, sitting, or lying down—the four major bodily movements— or during minor bodily movements.
