Even without chanting borikam words (Translator’s note: Repetitive words chanted during walking meditation) like stepping forward, stepping forward, we should have the mindfulness to be clearly aware of movements, clearly aware of shifting. Then, our mindfulness will be sustained longer and longer. If we do this, then our mindfulness will be present like a continuous chain.
In contemplating minor bodily movements, the thing that indicates to us that we contemplate well is: Our state of mind while we sit, before we get up to walk. For example, while we sit, before we get up to walk, our mind is totally unburdened, uncluttered, and light. As we get up to walk, we need to observe our state of mind also. As we shift, is our mind still uncluttered, still light? If our mind is uncluttered, the way to keep our mind uncluttered for a long period is to experience the atmosphere around our body, not just to experience the inside. Is the atmosphere around our body also light? As the atmosphere around our body is uncluttered, light – the feeling of lightness or the state of mind here will become the strength of our concentration. That is; our mind is peaceful, our mind is focused. When we open our eyes, the mindfulness is increased, the alertness emerges, and the mind will be quicker.
Therefore, before we blink, move, shift, pick up (something), touch, our mind will feel it straightaway. Our mindfulness will be quick. We will feel immediately that
