     2025 Hero Award Recipients
COMMUNITY HERO AWARD
This award honors an exceptional nonprofit organization,
community leader, volunteer or corporation based in
Douglas County. Nominees have made a significant impact
on charitable initiatives through financial investments, the
deployment of organizational resources, contributions to
the Douglas County community, or a combination of the
above. Outstanding volunteer community service that is sustained, direct, and impactful was also eligible for consideration.
Michael Connors, ConnorsK9-P.A.W.S
As a medically discharged Army veteran, Michael Connors knows all too well the toll service takes, both physically and mentally. After a dog named Megan literally saved his life, Michael became dedicated to training service dogs for other veterans––a notable way to bring back purpose and comradery for those who have given so much.
Michael’s nonprofit organization, ConnorsK9-P.A.W.S., trains and provides service dogs for eligible veterans, connects veterans through ongoing group trainings with other matched veteran/canine teams, and provides therapeutic outdoor events for veteran/canine teams.
Veterans are the focus of the nonprofit’s efforts, and the organization works with law enforcement, too. The only two mental health response therapy dogs in the state of Colorado working on CRT teams in the field were both provided by ConnorsK9-P.A.W.S.
Beyond the dogs, Michael organizes recreational outings and peer connection events to help veterans step back into society, feel purposeful and connect with others.
