Engineer Richie Flemming, South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR)
On January 14, 2025, while off duty and driving with his teenage son, Richie Fleming witnessed a vehicle lose control and crash into a pond off the shoulder of C-470 in Douglas County. The car came to rest with water reaching the driver’s side window.
Without hesitation and despite the freezing temperatures, Richie jumped into the pond and rescued the driver who was suffering from a severe altered mental status. He immediately provided initial care until the crews arrived, at which point he gave a thorough and detailed handoff.
“It was obvious and apparent that there was help needed,” said Richie, who has been a firefighter with SMFR for XX years. “It was an easy decision to stop and do as much as I could. We don’t do it because of recognition or a badge, we do it because it is something in our hearts,” he said.
Richie’s swift actions prevented the driver from attempting a dangerous self-extrication, which could have caused further harm and confusion on the scene. This courageous act performed off duty and under extreme conditions reflects Richie’s unwavering dedication to the safety of others and is a clear example of exceptional bravery.
