The narrative text also has characteristic where some sentences contain direct or indirect speech besides the

adverb of time. As you read the story of Timun Mas, you will notice that there are sentences that belong to direct and

indirect speech. Study the following pairs of sentences carefully!

Direct speech “I can give you a child, but you have to give the child back to me when she is seventeen

years old,” said the giant.

he could give her a child, but she had to give the child back to him when
Indirect speech The giant said that
she was seventeen years old.

Direct speech “These bags are for her. Tell her to open and use it one by one”, said the holy man.

Indirect speech The holy man said that
the bags were for her. He said to Mbok Randa to tell her to open and

use it one by one.
