A Drum Set Primer
A Drum Set- Originally named a Trap set -is an
abbreviation of the word, "contraption" and is the
combination of Percussion Instruments typically
comprised of a Snare Drum, Tom Toms, and Cymbals.
These Instruments are set up on stands, and
"Suspended" Typically, cymbals are attached to
"Cymbal or Hi-Hat" stands, while Tom Toms are
generally "Mounted" atop a Bass Drum-The Bass
Drum is the largest Drum in a Drum Set, but may
be inserted/attached to a stand or other drum set
suspension system. A Drum Set is Played with
drumsticks held in both hands, and the feet
operating a Bass Drum and Hi-Hat pedals,
controlling the hi-hat cymbals and Bass Drum
beater.
The Percussion Instruments of a Drum Set, are
categorized as membranophones and idiophones.
A standard modern kit, as used in popular music and
taught in music contains:A snare drum, mounted on a
stand. A bass drum, struck by a pedal operated by the
foot, housing a beater.
One or more toms, played with sticks or brushes
Generally consisting of three toms: rack tom 1 and 2,
and floor tom, a hi-hat (two cymbals mounted on a
foot activiated pedal stand, played with sticks, that
opens and closes via said foot pedal. It can also
produce sound with the foot alone, by engaging the
mounted hi-hat cymbals by activating the Hi-Hat
stand foot pedal.
