This restructuring was against a background of a new much

safer financial system where:

Banks hold more capital – Banks have rebuilt their

balance sheets in the wake of the global financial crisis
and are now much safer. The banks are holding greater

high-quality liquid assets aimed at allowing them to

survive a liquidity crisis such as that of 2007.

Ring-fencing – The UK’s largest banks are required to

separate their investment arms from their retail aimed

at protecting retail banking services from the riskier

investment arm.
