Page 4 - Case Studies 1 Belgian & Dutch Toxic Eggs Teaching Note
P. 4
Case Usage
The case was developed and used with both under
graduate and post graduate students (preferably at the
start to mid parts of the course). It is a case designed to
allow in-class work to be carried out and discussion to be
developed in general through applying theory to practice.
Case Rationale
This case study, Belgian & Dutch Toxic Eggs, is a teaching
case providing some help and interpretation of the
information provided. It explores a complex situation
covering the decision by the Dutch government not to
disclose the possible problem over insecticide-
contaminated eggs because it was investigating possible
fraud and Belgian law prohibits commenting on judicial
investigations. Belgium became the first country to
officially notify the EU’s food safety alert system. Belgium
had known about the problem since June. However, the
Dutch authorities knew about the problem as far back as
November 2016. Belgium then recalled eggs from its
supermarket shelves. German officials said up to 10
million of the contaminated eggs may have been sold in
Germany.
