SMART objectives
SMART objectives make it easier to assess if targets
have been met
Specific is there enough detailed information to
identify problems or opportunities? Is the objective
detailed enough to measure problems and
opportunities?
Measurable can a quantitative or qualitative
attribute be applied to create a metric?
Achievable: can the information be used to improve
performance?
Relevant: can the information be applied to the
specific problem faced by management?
Time-framed: can objectives be set for the different
time periods as targets to review against?
An objective that follows SMART is more likely to succeed
because it is clear and measurable. Moreover, it is seen as
achievable based on the available information and relevant
because it is founded on identified problems. Finally, the
timescale element provides milestones at which tasks
should be completed.
