Acid-Base Theory

               Arrhenius Theory

Arrhenius put forward a theory in his
               dissertation that ionic compounds would
dissociate in solution into their constituent ions.

Acids : substances / compounds that can
                                              +
release hydrogen ion (H ) in water.

                                   HA H + A (aq)

               Monoprotic Acid
                                                                                                    +
Monoprotic acid is acids that produce only an ion (H ). Its
ionizatiton can be represented by the following equation. Examples:

HCl, HBr, HI, CH COOH, HNO , etc.

               Polyprotic Acid

Polyprotic acid is acids which may give more than one hydrogen
                        +
ions (H ). For example, carbonic acid, H CO , the diprotic acid formed
                                                                         3
                                                                    2
when gaseous carbon dioxide is dissolved in water, undergoes the
               following ionization reactions. More examples: H SO , H S, H PO , etc.
