EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the Summer 2018 edition of SIGNAL Magazine.
In this issue we investigate several aspects of the EU defence landscape from some
different angles. Courtesy of the Institute for Strategic Studies, we look at the impact of
Brexit and analyse the shape of the EU defence sphere, and the UK defence sphere,
in terms of efficacy, industry and compatibility. The authors also offer some possible
solutions to mitigate against the possible effects of Brexit.
We also take a look at the recent Fine Gael led paper which analyses where its
Volume 16, Issue 1 MEP’s believe we should focus in terms of looking again at our defence and security

Editor: Elsewhere we take a fascinating look at the impact of drone technology for the Naval
Ruairi Kavanagh Service, many thanks to Lt Cdr Phil Watson and also the DF response to the extreme
weather of earlier this year. Particular thanks to 2nd Lt Patrick Tobin for contributing
Consulting Editors: an article and photos on this. It makes for very interesting reading. Also thanks to Ray
Lt Col Earnán Naughton Gammell, People & Performance Officer with Etihad Airways, for his recollections on his
Comdt (Ret’d) Conor Lynch Defence Forces career and the impact of the military on his post-Defence Forces work.
