In July 2017, the international Physical Internet conference took place in Graz, Austria and was attended by Grainne Lynch CMILT. The theme of the conference was “Towards a smart hyperconnected era of efficient and sustainable logistics, supply chains and transportation”.
During the three day conference, Grainne attended presentations on topics such as Physical Internet Technology and Governance, Hyperconnected Logistics, and Energy reduction and resource efficiency presented by leaders and innovators from the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, KNAPP Group (warehouse automation and software), Jungheinrich System Solutions, and MixMoveMatch a Software as a Service solution for logistics operations.

Of particular interest was a presentation by Spanish company Everis on Blockchain technology. Widely heralded as the next big thing to disrupt how we currently process transactions; Blockchain provides a model for how to exchange information in a chronological and immutable manner. An interesting example was presented - Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance and NTT DATA Corporation conducted a
proof-of-concept project on applying blockchain technology to insurance policies, which are shared among trading parties along with the bill of lading and commercial invoices. According to Tokio Marine, "The blockchain based system will cut 85% of the shipper's time of data inputting work in order to receive an insurance certificate”.
Grainne was co-author on two innovation papers; “Modular Solutions for Mobile Hospitals” and “Hyper-connected Modular Renewable Energy Production”. Grainne presented on the topic of humanitarian logistics and in particular the logistics challenge of deploying hospitals in an efficient and timely manner utilising the modular concepts of the Physical Internet. Grainne mentioned the logistical operations of the European Nordic Battlegroup in her presentation and credited the Irish Defence Forces for their ongoing innovations in this area.
