Supply Chain Innovation Leaders’ Summit, Barcelona, October 2017
In October 2017, the 8th Annual Global Supply Chain Leaders’ Summit conference took place in Barcelona, Spain and was attended by Gráinne Lynch CMILT on behalf of Enterprise System Partners, with whom Gráinne works as a Supply Chain and Serialisation consultant. The goal of the conference was “... to illuminate key pain points across the Supply Chain and Packaging to improve partnerships, planning & performance, decision making, cost-efficiency, packaging compliance and serialisation.”
During the two-day conference, Gráinne presented, listened to and learned about the issues facing global supply chains especially in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors. Delegates heard about the impact of digital transformation in pharma, global supply chain security, managing the diversity in serialisation regulation across many markets, end-to-end process excellence for 3PLs, mastering temperature control, the business impact of a global supply chain strategy and Blockchain.
Gráinne spoke on the topic of Pharmaceutical Serialisation and Track and Trace, specifically discussing the packaging and supply chain challenges ahead of the legislative deadlines for the European Falsified Medicines Directive in 2019. Another Irish speaker from Cork, Sylvia Kiely, Global Head, Supply Chain Management & Chemical Operations with Novartis, gave an insightful talk on the business impact of Integrated Business Planning (IBP). There were many logistics service providers present such as; Logesta, DataLong16 and arviem to name three.

When asked about the most memorable speaker, Gráinne recalled the sage advice of Alphonse Crespo, physician and Medical Expert with Swiss-based patient advocacy organisation Med-Consilium. Mr Crespo said that medical students could really benefit from understanding the manufacture and supply of pharmaceuticals that they prescribe. An excellent idea!
