Conclusion: Pressed but Not Yet Ignited
Humanity was pressed through bottlenecks, confined to refugia, and pushed
out through climate windows. These crises acted as filters and refiners:
reducing numbers, concentrating genomes, and rewarding innovation.
By ~70 ka, the stage was set:
Bottlenecks had pruned humanity to a small, focused population.
Climate windows opened dispersal routes.
Symbolic culture became the tool of survival.
But all this was preparation. Bottlenecks and climates did not ignite the
symbolic mind. They set the vessel in place.
