Why the ‘Waiting in the Background’ Defense Fails
To be fully fair:
Evolutionary biologists would argue that not all loci had to appear within
the same 2,500 years. Some might have arisen earlier and “waited in the
background” until others arrived.
They would also note that regulatory networks can amplify small changes
— i.e., not every locus has to mutate independently for cognition to shift.
Even with those caveats, the central paradox remains: the archaeological
record shows a long silence despite anatomically modern brains, followed by a
sudden symbolic explosion. The mathematics, when treated honestly,
highlight how improbable it is to attribute this to unguided, coincidental
synchrony.
