Re: Request for Qualifications for Architectural Design Services
Regents School of Austin | Campus Expansion Program
Dear Robin,
The timing couldn’t have been better.
Back in July 1999, there was disappointment and a sense of urgency amongst several of the
original founders of Regents School of Austin (RSA). They (Ty Willis, John Needham, Don
& Margaret Collis) had been working with a nationally-recognized architectural firm on the
design of the first permanent building on the Foster Ranch campus. The design solutions
being considered were very Texas-like, with Hill County flavor, but failed to express the strong
Classical Education DNA that was Regent’s heart and soul. The design firm wasn’t very flexible
and so the decision was made to give a responsive, local architecture firm a chance. A firm that
would work side-by-side with Regents.
The founders knew (John) Jackson, (Bob) Galloway, and (Steve) Collier mostly from their church
friendships and JGC had proven their capabilities on several smaller projects at the Exposition
and Foster Ranch modular classroom campuses. The big challenge was to create an archetypal
building, with form and materials, that was to be primarily an athletic, not academic, facility.
AND, as Margret Collis added, “We would love for our oldest son, Chris, to play his senior year
basketball season in the new Gym” – only seven months away!
Fortunately, a contractor had already been selected and the construction of the building pad
was already underway. The interlaced limestone arches design was quickly embraced as the
signature classical motif for the school. Bob Galloway managed the fast-track project and the
Knights were able to host their 2000 conference schedule of home games in their brand-new
gymnasium – and conduct graduation just a few months later.
Since those initial years, Jackson Galloway Architects (JGA) has provided programming and
schematic design for most of the buildings on campus, been Architect of Record for the Logic
Building, developed the west campus athletic master plan, and completed numerous studies
for a new Fine Arts Performance Hall of various sizes and locations throughout the campus.
The timing couldn’t be better.
