Finally, the committee’s deliverables and outputs are as follows:
• Indicator Rationalization Framework
• SDG Localization and Stakeholder Engagement Plan
• SDG Monitoring Tool which allows the city to track progress on implementation and sustainability monitoring. VLR Reporting Template, Preparation, and Submission Plan
• Open SDG Platform
• VLR Reporting Template, Preparation, and Submission Plan
The Committee has advanced the Indicator Rationalization framework by convening a series of internal sessions to match UN metrics with appropriate local performance indicators. The City’s performance indicators come from a variety of places, including the SDBIP, the National Treasury Outcome Indicators (also known as Circular 88 Indicators), and Provincial Back to Basics quarterly reporting. The goal of the project is to align existing performance reporting methods to actively contribute to the city’s achievement of the SDGs, rather than duplicating reporting. The city can also detect any reporting gaps that may exist because of this simplification process. The UN Habitat-designed SDG Monitoring Tool and the Open SDG Platform, which are now being piloted internally with the Water and Sanitation Department, have also made progress. Following the completion of the pilot, these tools will be expanded to include other areas that respond to the SDGs.
The methodology alluded to in this chapter largely looked at the high-level alignment of the SDGs to key strategic processes in the municipality such as Planning and Budgeting, the following chapter would showcase the practical expression of implementation of the global agenda.
“The committee’s mandate
is to serve as a coordinating instrument for all SDG efforts, including but not limited to facilitating partnerships with external stakeholders such
as civil society, private sector organizations, academia, and local communities, with the goal of driving and measuring local action toward SDG targets. ”
