MAYOR’S FOREWORD
Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda
– His Worship, eThekwini Municipality
As we traverse through the global pandemic of Covid-19, we are plunged into a humanitarian and socio- economic crisis that we are likely to bear the impacts of for years to come. This pandemic has exacerbated some of the vulnerabilities and inequalities that our city has faced and has confirmed how interdependent and fragile
our socio-economic systems are. A city that was on a trajectory to good progress, has now felt the impacts of the pandemic that to some extent slowed our progress.
As we respond and reset to recover, we reimagine the transformative approaches that will be needed for progress towards the 2030 Agenda. The disruptions that the city has faced has allowed for introspection of the way we do things such as embracing technology and looking for opportunities that can accelerate progress towards the sustainable goals. The imperative to ensure that no one is left behind has never been so urgent.
We must lead by example by sharing our knowledge and experiences so that we can all learn and grow together. I am confident that this publication, which highlights some of the good practices that our city has been at the forefront of implementing, will inspire other cities to engage as a collective and work together towards freeing our people from poverty as well as to heal and secure our planet. I commend the work of our dedicated employees who collaborate and innovate in order to create sustainable solutions and strive for a better future for all.
As a city we are committed to building a South Africa that is sustainable in every way and offers a better quality of life for everyone.
